What is a Grinder Pump Station?

A grinder pump “station” consists of the pump, a tank, and an alarm panel. A pump for household use is usually 1 hp, 1.5 hp or 2 hp. A cutting mechanism macerates waste and grinds items that are not normally found in sewage but may get flushed down the toilet.

  • An alarm will trigger the red light on top of the panel to turn on
  • Hear beeping noise
  • Possible gurgling/bubbling noise can be heard in your pipes
  • Possible overflow from the grinder pump station

What to do if your grinder pump alarm is flashing or making a noise.

  • Please call the Wastewater Department immediately at (615) 672-3654
  • STOP using water in your home.
  • Do not flush the toilets, run the dishwater, use a washing machine, or have a shower because this could cause the septic tank to fill up and send wastewater back up through the pipes and into your home.
