What is a Grinder Pump Station?
A grinder pump “station” consists of the pump, a tank, and an alarm panel. A pump for household use is usually 1 hp, 1.5 hp or 2 hp. A cutting mechanism macerates waste and grinds items that are not normally found in sewage but may get flushed down the toilet.
What cannot be flushed down your toilet?
- Baby wipes or cleaning wipes
- Feminine/Male products
- Diapers
- Fat / Oil / Grease (FOG)
- Paint
- Paper Towels
- Cotton or Fabric
- Bandages / Plasters
- Contact Lenses
How to determine if your grinder pump station isn’t working properly?
- An alarm will trigger the red light on top of the panel to turn on
- Hear beeping noise
- Possible gurgling/bubbling noise can be heard in your pipes
- Possible overflow from the grinder pump station
What to do if your grinder pump alarm is flashing or making a noise.
- Please call the Wastewater Department immediately at (615) 672-3654
- STOP using water in your home.
- Do not flush the toilets, run the dishwater, use a washing machine, or have a shower because this could cause the septic tank to fill up and send wastewater back up through the pipes and into your home.
